Kailash, Mansarovar & Guge Kingdom Trek – 20 Days

Kailash, Mansarovar & Guge Kingdom Trek

Mount Kailash and the Guge Kingdom are the two major attractions in west Tibet.

Unknown to the world and detached for centuries behind the nearly impassable Himalayas, Mt. Kailash at 6714m is a major pilgrimage site for some of the world’s foremost religions.

Hindus worship Kailash as the spiritual center of the world where Lord Shiva & his consort Goddess Parvati live. Buddhists worship the mountain as Kang Rinpoche. For Bonpos (followers of the Bon religion) it is Tungdrung Gutse or the nine storied swastika mountain and for Jains it is the sacred peak of Asthapda.

A 53km parikrama or kora (circumambulation) of the mountain is said to erase the sins of a lifetime. The serene and beautiful sacred Lake Mansarover lies just 30km away from Mt Kailash.

Across continuing hills not very far from Mount Kailash is another precious jewel of Tibet – the Buddhist Kingdom of Guge.

The Guge Kingdom established in the ninth century by the descendants of the Tibetan Empire has a glorious past. The Guge Kingdom was famous for its colorful paintings, sculptures and extraordinary wooden carvings. Today the ruins of the grand palace of the Kingdom stand tall on the banks of the Xiangquan River making it a fantastic touristic destination.

This trek starts at Simikot; moves through Muchu and climbs to Sipsip before descending to Hilsa. From this point we drive to Taklakot and to Mansarovar. From Mansarovar we continue our drive to Tirthapuri, another holy pilgrimage site in the Mount Kailash Region, and then to the Guge Kingdom.

After sightseeing we depart Guge Kingdom and drive to Darchen and trek to Zutulpuk via Dira-Puk. From Zutulpuk we drive to Saga and finally to Kathmandu.
